From Hell

Tomorrow (23rd February 2013) marks the release of the new Daemon army book for WHFB and codex for 40k as well as a whole host of new models. It's like they knew my birthday was coming up or something. It all goes on for advance order tomorrow and should be released the following week which will either mean they're out just before or actually on my birthday. Interesting how these things work out.

Now I've been looking at the rumours and the blog posts with pictures and I have to say that of all the new releases I'm very excited about the new Heralds (don't get me wrong I love my conversions but these new releases are better). There will be a new Herald for Khorne, Slaanesh and Nurgle, although I don't think I'll ever be able to actually like the Herald of Tzeentch that is already available but that's just my opinion. They are all basically bigger versions of their core units/troops but look cooler and I'm torn between my new favourite being either the Herald of Slaanesh or Nurgle. I'll have to buy, assemble and paint them before I decide.

Another thing that looks to be on the horizon are the Plague Drones of Nurgle. Now assuming that the pictures I've seen haven't been fake they look like Plaguebearers riding really big flies. Yes you read it right, big flies. Based on the pictures I'm not sure I like them or not but again I think I'll have to see them before I make up my mind.

On the subject of weird I've also seen pictures of a Burning Chariot of Tzeentch that is basically every single Tzeentch model thrown together on one base with extra fieriness. When I first saw the picture I wasn't taken at all but the more I think about it the more I can see the possibilities of it and the more it appeals to me. The main thing about it is that I can tie together my Tzeentch units without actually having a binding theme which exemplifies what Tzeentch is all about really and also it gives me an excuse to go crazy with the painting and create a lot of different effects just because I can. I think it's a safe bet I'll be investing in one of these.

Now onto weird with a beard, the Skull Cannon of Khorne. Khorne isn't generally known for ranged attack but now they have a cannon. Can't see how that position went down well with the bloodletters but I guess even Khorne can be as fickle as the rest of the Gods sometimes. The pictures I've seen don't exactly appeal to me so I think I'll only get one for the sake of completeness unless it really adds something special to my army that it can't get any other way.

So it looks to me as though they are trying to de-specialise the factions by giving Khorne some range, Tzeentch more fast moving close combat units and Nurgle is also getting the speed treatment. I don't know if they're doing anything with Slaanesh but they've probably altered the way the existing units operate, maybe made them a bit tougher or something.

All in all I'm quite excited about the new releases and I'm very much looking forward to seeing (and owning) the new models and books.
